February Vacation 2014:

Fun Activities for RI Families

February vacation starts in a matter of hours. All across Rhode Island, moms are wondering how to keep their little darlings busy for nine days--all without cabin fever sitting in.  Sound familiar?  Well, grab a cup of cocoa and sit back because Sing With B’s RI February Vacation Activity Guide is here, and this is going to be the best February vacation ever. In honor of Valentines Day, here are 14 ideas for February family fun.

  1. If you haven’t stopped by the new Biomes Marine Biology Center on Post Rd in North Kingstown, this is a must-see attraction. Regular hours are Monday-Friday 12-5, but visit on February 19th for a “late night” event until 7pm.

  2. Head over the bridge and enjoy “Teddy Bear Storytime” complete with milk and cookies at the Newport Marriott on February 18th at 11:00.

  3. Expose your children to live music-making at Portsmouth’s GreenVale Vineyards “Live Jazz for Kids” event from 1-4 on Thursday, February 20th.

  4. Enjoy a day at the beach--bathing suits optional! Sunday, February 23rd from 11-2 is Festival Day at Easton’s Beach in Newport. This fun community celebration features a children’s block hunt (prepare to get dirty!) a polar bear plunge, a sand sculpture contest, carousel rides, music, and more!

  5. Bring the kids to Launch in Warwick to bounce off some energy! School vacation hours are Monday-Thursday 10am-9pm, Friday and Saturday 10am-10pm, and Sunday 10am-8pm. Looking for a deal? Take advantage of their ‘Beat the Clock’ special: purchase tickets for 10 am for only $7/hour or 11 am for only $9/hour!

  6. Join Jane Demming of the Ocean State Animal Coalition for a live animal demonstration on February 18th at 1:00 at Kids Zone.

  7. Catch the Toe Jam Puppet Band’s performance at the North Kingstown Free Library on Friday, February 21st at 3 pm. Preregistration is required--hurry, this one fills up fast! 294-3306

  8. Visit the zoo and receive half-price admission through the end of February!

  9. Have a good laugh at the Children’s Museum on Monday, February 17th during one of Keith Munslow’s three hysterical performances.

  10. Have an older child (7+) with an interest in guitar? Sign up for the Pow Science! group guitar class on Tuesday at 4:00pm. The first class is free.

  11. Bundle up and spend some time at Rhode Island’s only snow tubing park. FYI: Yawgoo offers advanced online ticketing which is highly advisable on a vacation week.

  12. Take the commuter train from Wickford Junction to Providence for lunch and a stroll around the Providence Place Mall.

  13. Put on your boots, snow pants, and winter coat and head off on an adventure--in search of seals! Walk the John Chafee Nature Preserve Path off of Route 1A in North Kingstown to the end of Rome Point. In the past few weeks, as many as 84 seals have been seen basking in the sun on the rocks. It’s an incredible experience to share with your children!

  14. Spend at least one day this week in your pajamas--all day--from start to finish. Snuggle, read books, play games, and vow not to leave the house for the day. Eat breakfast for dinner, throw on some tunes and have a dance party in the kitchen. Get silly. Have fun.
